Other than the big toe, which joints are most commonly affected by gout?

Gout most often begins with one joint affected in the lower extremities, usually the first metatarsophalangeal joint. The next most frequent locations are the midtarsi, ankles and knees. The initial attack is rarely polyarticular and seldom affects the shoulders or hips.
