67 y/o male presents with atraumatic left eye pain. Exam notes 25% anterior chamber hyphema, 20/30 vision, intra-ocular pressure (IOP) 30 mm Hg. Should he be admitted or discharged home?

Discharge on cycloplegic, topical steroids and medications to decrease IOP with close outpatient follow up is appropriate.

Admission Criteria include:
  • medically uncontrolled IOP (< 30 mm Hg for non-sickle patients, < 24 mm Hg for sickle patients) requiring surgical intervention
  • children < 7 y/o in which irreversible amblyopia can develop secondary to visual deprivation  
  •  associated ocular or orbital injuries ie ruptured globe
