- place patient in a position that widens the rectal orifice ie knee-chest
- apply sugar and/or ice to the exposed rectal tissue to help reduce its volume
- insert a gloved index finger wrapped with toilet tissue into the lumen of the prolapsed rectal tissue and apply constant, firm pressure. Once the prolapse has been reduced, remove the gloved finger and leave the toilet tissue inside the rectum to be passed with the next bowel movement.
