What should be done with a throat culture which grows group C or G streptococci?

Groups C and G streptococci are common commensals of the human pharynx. The extent to which they cause sporadically occurring episodes of true acute pharyngitis is unclear. Given the difficulty in differentiating benign colonization from true infection with groups C or G streptococci, the benefit of antimicrobial therapy in these cases is unknown. Should therapy be elected, the same antibiotics used to treat group A strep are appropriate but a shorter duration of therapy is likely adequate given that non-group A strep do not cause acute rheumatic fever.
